Health Screening

Children in Reception will have their height, weight and vision checked by the School Nursing Team. Year 6 pupils will have their height and weight checked.

Additional hearing or dental checks may be carried out following a referral. Parental consent will always be obtained before any screening takes place.

Medical and Dental Appointments

Where possible, please arrange appointments outside school hours.

If your child needs to attend an appointment during the school day, please inform us in advance.  A parent or carer must collect them from the school office.

Medicines

Whenever possible, medicines should be taken outside school hours. School staff can only administer prescribed medicines that are required four times a day.

If your child needs prescribed medication during school hours:

• Bring it to the school office in its original, labelled container.
• Complete the required consent form.
• Ensure the medication is in date and includes dosage instructions.

Staff cannot administer over-the-counter medicines such as Calpol. Parents or carers must come into school to give these themselves.

Medical Conditions, Asthma and Allergies

Please inform the school office of any long-term medical conditions and complete a healthcare plan where required.

If your child has an inhaler or EpiPen:

• Ensure it is clearly labelled with their name.
• Provide written instructions for its use.
• Check regularly that it is in date and working correctly.

If your child has a severe allergy that could cause anaphylaxis, please inform the school immediately. Children with prescribed EpiPens should provide at least one, preferably two, for use in an emergency, along with a completed healthcare plan.

The school has an emergency inhaler and EpiPen available, but parental consent is required before they can be used.

Please do not send throat sweets or cough sweets into school.

First Aid

Minor injuries will be treated at school. Parents will be contacted if there is a head injury or any cause for concern.

In the event of a serious accident or illness, we will contact parents immediately. If we are unable to reach you, the school will take appropriate action to ensure your child receives the care they need.
